Data center cooling loops

In a facility where nobody is allowed to shut anything down, a meter that clamps to the outside of the pipe is often the only measurement you can take at all.

Measurement without a maintenance window

The constraint in a data center is not accuracy, it is access. Nothing gets cut, nothing gets drained, and a maintenance window to install a permanent meter may be months away. Clamp-on measurement sidesteps that entirely — the pipe stays intact and the load stays up.

What people measure

  • CDU loop flow on liquid-cooled deployments, where the design flow per rack is specified but rarely verified after commissioning.
  • CRAH coil flow where a row is running warm and the question is whether the coil is starved or fouled.
  • Primary and secondary loop balance in a plant with decoupled pumping, where secondary exceeding primary is the classic cause of a warm supply temperature.
  • Thermal load per hall with the UF801-P energy kit, for capacity planning that is based on measurement rather than nameplate.

Access, not accuracy, is usually the constraint. Here the only reachable straight run was in a floor trench under grating.

Glycol changes the numbers

Most data center loops run a glycol mix, and glycol has a different sound speed than water — it varies with both concentration and temperature. Enter the actual fluid, not water. If you do not know the concentration, measure it with a refractometer before you measure flow. A 30% mix entered as water will give you a confidently wrong answer.

Practical access notes

  • Insulated chilled water pipe needs an insulation window cut and reinstated.
  • Under-floor pipework is often the only accessible straight run. Plan for tile lifts.
  • Stainless and copper both read well. Very thick-walled carbon steel with heavy internal scale is the difficult case.
Can I measure data center cooling flow without downtime?
Yes. Clamp-on ultrasonic meters read through the pipe wall, so there is no pipe penetration, no drain-down and no maintenance window required.
Does glycol affect the reading?
Yes. Glycol has a different sound speed than water and it varies with concentration and temperature. Enter the actual fluid and concentration, and verify the mix with a refractometer if you are unsure.
Which meter suits a CDU loop?
The Ultra ProLite at $699 per week for typical CDU and branch pipe sizes. For plant room mains or extended logging, take the UF801-P.
